Design Within Beach
While the rest of the world hibernates under fleece blankets and bad lighting, you, dear reader, have the vision to think ahead. Modern beach house design isn’t just about seaside glamour; it’s a masterclass in balancing minimalism with texture, serenity with sophistication. So why not channel that winter-induced restlessness into something productive – like planning your next renovation or curating a mood board for a coastal retreat? By the time the snow melts, you’ll be ahead of the game. Or just keep dreaming – it pairs nicely with hot chocolate and denial about scraping your windshield tomorrow.

SEA THROUGH

The BBC roundup of the world’s best seaside sanctuaries showcases how clever architecture can turn a patch of sand into a living masterpiece. From houses that seem to float on waves to those built to survive everything short of a kraken attack, these designs are as bold as they are beautiful. Dive in for inspiration – or just to stoke a little envy for your next coastal daydream.
OCEAN’S THIRTEEN

Designing a coastal masterpiece isn’t just about plopping a house near the water – it’s about capturing the soul of the sea and weaving it into every corner. These 13 homes are the epitome of oceanfront luxury, where impeccable design meets the elemental power of the waves. They balance openness with intimacy, elegance with ease, creating spaces that feel like an extension of the horizon itself. Living here? It’s an experience that makes you wonder if the ocean might actually be jealous.
THE MANY LIVES (AND HIVES) OF MARTHA STEWART

When it comes to coastal living, Martha Stewart is practically Poseidon with better lighting. Her design tips – layering textures, embracing natural palettes, and always leaving room for a perfectly styled oyster platter – are the stuff of seaside legend. But Martha doesn’t stop at decor; her Netflix documentary The Many Lives of Martha Stewart reveals a woman who’s not just a lifestyle guru but a queen of reinvention. Whether she’s curating coastal chic or tending to her iconic beehives, one thing’s for sure: Martha sets the standard.
GALAPA GO!

Looking for a beach vacation that’s more wild wonder than crowded resort? The Galápagos Islands are a living evolutionary exhibit with fearless wildlife and untouched landscapes that feel plucked from another planet. The Upon Return travel guide dropped its top picks for global beach escapes, including these magical islands off Ecuador. The only way to see them properly is from a small, luxury boat. One of our favorites is a sleek, intimate vessel carrying just 20 guests and 20 staff, redefining what it means to explore in style.

ON THE BOARDS
On the boards this month we are sharing a retreat of a different type – a cozy and inspiring home work and creative space that we have the pleasure to design for a very special repeat client. The space is currently a beautiful, modern blank slate with polished concrete floors and warm, light wood paneling. Outside the windows are picturesque views of the beautiful Virginia countryside. Our client tasked us with creating a multi-purpose space to work, create art, journal, read and also to recharge and relax.
By keeping the materials and finishes simple and neutral with an emphasis on natural materials – warm woods, textured plaster, seagrass and wool – the organic elements and neutral textiles create a layered, dimensional, and cozy space that feels light and airy, uncomplicated and welcoming.
