What Matters

January 2021 Issue

She’s a Rainbow

Let’s use a 53-year-old song by The Rolling Stones in order to look back at 2020 and forward to 2021.  “She comes in colours,” says the song.  We’re beginning to see the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel.  We see optimism, kindness, and color. We also want to highlight some of the good stories from 2020 through the lens of Interior Matter.  Positive stories about art, music, food, travel, and entertainment.

Do the Wright Thing

This is what happens when creative people who are constrained by the pandemic discover a way to host an art exhibition in a famous building and also do good.  It’s a mashup of a Detroit-based modern art gallery, a famous home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, a digital platform in which to have visitors see the exhibition, and a non-profit called Freedom House which provides resources to asylum seekers.  Both the story and artwork are happy and colorful, so please enjoy the Library Street Collective’s SITE: Art and Architecture in the Digital Space.

True Colors

Australian born Christine Ruksenas-Burton’s paintings are hard edge color field linear abstractions, a style rooted in a movement that began in New York City in the 1940s pioneered by Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, and Clyfford Still. Her paintings are conversations of colors inspired by her homeland as well as modern art, minimalism, modernist architecture, and design. “We all have a subconscious relationship with color that affects us. However, we are conditioned to respond to colors in expected ways, like associating red with danger. I want people to explore feeling the colors before judging them. My paintings provide an opportunity to do so.”  For Ruksenas-Burton’s paintings and other DC regional artists, contact Client Raiser.

In Living Color

One of our current ongoing projects is for a young family with a love of color and midcentury influences. We always love projects where we can play with vibrant color palettes; good use of color can create some pretty beautiful spaces! Below are some of our design boards and material palettes for the project where we lay out the color story for our clients’ new home.
