And in London, the V&A East Storehouse turns museum storage into a public stage. These projects signal a shift toward openness, regional identity, and design that invites you in. FANTASY ISLAND

Designed by Tadao Ando, the Naoshima New Museum of Art integrates into the Honmura hillside with a minimalist black façade and natural materials that echo the local village. Inside, a central stairwell channels light through two underground galleries. This is the first museum on the island to focus on contemporary Asian art, signaling a broader curatorial pivot. Since the 1990s, Naoshima, which is often called Japan’s “art island,” has been transformed by the Benesse Foundation into a site where contemporary art, architecture, and the landscape are interwoven. Existing institutions, such as the Chichu Art Museum and Benesse House, have showcased Western artists in site-specific installations; this new museum brings a more regional voice into that ongoing dialogue.

REED ALL ABOUT IT

The New Taipei City Art Museum, designed by Kris Yao | Artech and situated at the confluence of the Yingge and Dahan rivers, features a building façade composed of slender vertical fins that evoke river reeds and reference the area’s natural floodplain. Terraced public plazas at the base extend into the surrounding park, encouraging pedestrian flow and community use. Inside, exposed concrete, natural light, and minimal detailing offer a flexible, contemplative space for rotating exhibitions. As part of a broader revitalization of Yingge, which is Taiwan’s ceramics capital, the museum is positioned to bridge local craft heritage with contemporary visual culture, reinforcing its identity not as a closed institution but as an open and active platform for public engagement.

FORT SIGHT

The Malta International Contemporary Art Space (MICAS) merges fortress heritage with contemporary architecture. Housed within the restored 17th-century Ospizio walls in Floriana, the design by Ipostudio Architetti introduces a sculptural roof structure that bridges old and new. The angular canopy hovers above a flexible, column-free main hall, while raw limestone and concrete interiors echo the surrounding Maltese landscape. Opened in 2024 as Malta’s first national museum for contemporary art, MICAS offers expansive space for exhibitions, performances, and cultural programming. It’s both a landmark and a platform connecting local heritage with the international art scene.

CLOSET CASE

V&A East Storehouse is London’s newest design and culture hub, where behind-the-scenes is the main attraction. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, this isn’t your typical museum. This is a massive, purpose-built space housing over 250,000 objects from the Victoria and Albert Museum’s mind-blowing collection of art, design, fashion, and more. Think open storage meets creative lab. You can watch conservators in action, join hands-on tours, or just wander through shelves stacked with everything from 18th-century gowns to space-age tech. It is like a design library, and you don’t need to whisper.
