The Travel Bug

We know it seems like 17 years since we were able to travel, but just like the cicadas, we’re beginning to emerge from the pandemic. As the globe slowly opens to vaccinated travelers, we thought we would return to highlighting what’s new in design and tourism around the world. If you’re planning trips or still just dreaming of getting away, we focus on new sites in New York, Oslo, and Giza.

What the Frick?

New York City is back! Many bars are requiring vaccine cards prior to entry and some new tourist spots recently opened after construction over the pandemic. The Frick Collection has temporarily located to the former Whitney Museum designed by Marcel Breuer on Madison Avenue. The Frick’s former home, a block wide Beaux-Arts mansion is being updated, upgraded, and augmented over the next two years before the collection returns. Also, check out The Little Island at Pier 55 in the Meatpacking District. It’s an engineering marvel with views up and down the Hudson. Lastly, Sothebys has opened a retail experience called The Emporium with curated items from its collection available for browsing and purchase.

I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for the Scream

The Scream by Edvard Munch has a home at the new Munch Museum on Oslo’s waterfront. When it opens, it will be one of the world’s largest museums dedicated to one artist. Designed by the Spanish architectural firm Estudio Herreros, the museum features a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in transport, energy use, and material use. While in Oslo, be sure to check out these home and design shops. And while you’re there, board one of the most incredible rail journeys in the world – the Flåm Railway, which offers a panoramic view of some of the most stunning nature amongst the Norwegian fjords.

New Giza Requirements

Opening in late 2021, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) will be the world’s largest archaeological museum. At a cost of $1B (USD) it spans the 162 foot difference in levels between the Nile and the Giza plateau. Everything you need to know is here and here. And for a luxurious home base while in Giza, check out the Four Seasons and Sofitel.
